the diary of a [newbie] rock climber

i've recently discovered the intoxication that is rock climbing. what follows is a collection of random thoughts, experiences and images related to my newbie rock climbing adventures. note: climbing is a dangerous activity. these are only my opinions and shouldn't be substituted for good sense and education. climb safely and at your own risk.

hey reader. who are you?

most nights, before bed, i log onto the control panel (funny term, eh?) of newclimber.com and look at the site statistics for the previous 24 hours. you can learn a lot about a website and its visitors from these numbers. for example, with halloween just around the corner, search engines seem to like to hook people up with my "best (worst?) mountaineering costume ever" story. it's a popular posting right now.

but these "hit" numbers don't tell the whole story. i still don't know about the real people who randomly end up here after searching for, say, clif family wines, or about the folks who have this site's feed bookmarked.

so i'm curious. who the heck are ya? how did you end up here? are you a climber? a new climber?

it would be great to hear from you. if you want to tell me/us more, here are two options: 1) post a public comment on this story and tell us a bit about you and your connection with the diary or 2) for you shy folks, write me at david (at) newclimber.com and tell me what brought you here today.

i won't beg, but please don't leave us hangin'. we're so very much counting on you!

Afternoon! I'm a regular reader of your Blog - subscribed by RSS, no less, and one half of the people working on Bouldr.

I'm particularly enjoying your posts on climbing in advertising / popular culture.

Keep up the good work, David!

Hey,
Well, I think I found your blog in someone's blogroll list, and I've had it in my feed reader since. I always enjoy reading well written blog posts about climbing, seems like many of the ones out there just aren't all that interesting. And it's cool to see how you are enjoying getting into this sport!

I run a climbing website for western Colorado called splitterchoss.com.

Oh, and if you're wondering about the big traffic spike you're going to see in your stats from today, check out StumbleUpon ;-)

I think I found your site via a post on peakr but I can't be too sure. I just started searching and reading some climbing blogs mainly because I wanted more information on where good outdoor climbing/bouldering is that isn't around my hometown of Baltimore. I read your site via rss. I think your photos (specifically the gallery of Mt. Evans) was what made me bookmark the site and keep looking for more. That and I'm just plain addicted to anything climbing related. :)

Been climbing for just over a year. Started bouldering about 5 months ago and can't go back to anything else at the moment. The quality of the climbs here in Baltimore isn't so great so I have not done much outdoors. Hopefully I'll take a trip somewhere cool out west in the next year or so and get experience bouldering in some much cooler and extensive areas. Just have to find the right friends willing to go along with me.

I don't talk a ton about climbing in my blog, but you're welcome to read or feed it!

Take care...

Hello David,

I read on your blog that you ask yourself about who are your readers. So I
try to give an answer ! Sorry if my english is not very good...

I'm Laurence Guyon, climber from France. I work for the french free magazine
Escalade.mag : http://www.escalademag.com/

I often read your blog, which is cool and original. Not only performance,
hard routes repeated by strong climbers, but a lot of different news, giving
a good image of climbing and inspiration. Keep going !

Bye bye
Laurence

I found your blog using a blog search engine. My friends and I have been hikers for years, and we got interested in climbing on Breakneck Ridge. We realized we could do that climb much faster with a few basic rock climbing instructions. We hit a bouldering gym, learned a few things, and now climb indoors several times a week. We climb at the gunks some, but since we live in NYC, it's a chore to get up there. So mostly we boulder, and though we are not very good at it, we are in love. Glad to have found your blog. Come and see mine if you like, but be warned: it's 10% climbing, 90% silliness.
